Buying Property in Australia — 4 Costs Beyond the Deposit
Saved the deposit? Keep going
A deposit is only one part of the buying budget. Before making an offer, build a buffer for other purchase costs.
1. Transfer duty
Check what duty applies in your state and whether you qualify for any first-home or other relief. Eligibility and amounts change, so use the current government calculator or advice.
2. Property reports
Depending on the property, consider building and pest reports, strata records or other due-diligence reports before committing.
3. Legal and conveyancing
Ask your solicitor or conveyancer what the quote includes, what extra searches may cost and what is payable if the purchase does not proceed.
4. Loan and moving costs
Confirm lender fees, valuation or application costs where relevant, possible lenders mortgage insurance if it applies, and practical moving/setup costs.
